My Wish on 11.11.11...To Dance!

Since my blog is called, "Dancing with Megan Judd" I have to throw in a dance something or other every now and then! Today is 11.11.11 and it is also Dancesport at Brigham Young University. In case you're unfamiliar with Dancesport, I'll give a brief intro to it.

Every November and March BYU hosts a Dancesport Championship. Pretty much the highlight of the year for every Ballroom Dancer at BYU. You practice for months with your partner, get all dressed up with lots of sparkles, colors and fake tanner. Then you go on the floor and dance your heart out for 1 min and 45 seconds of pure exhiliration, as hundreds and thousands yell, cheer and scream! It's great! If you've never been, definitely check it out sometime!

My Refinished Summer

I know my last post was quite some time ago, okay, 3 1/2 months ago...gulp. Right, well, I have been BUSY this summer, busy building and creating more furniture projects than I ever thought I would! All of this came about for 2 good reasons:

1. Moving into an unfurnished apartment

2. My Grandmother

About the same time I decided to move into my now lovely apartment, (which was unfurnished) I also had the task of helping clear out my Grandmother's house so we could sell it. After the family came in and went through everything, there was still a lot of furniture left over that no one wanted. Conveniently, it fell into my lap. Only one problem...it wasn't very cute. (no offense Grandma! ) So we decided we could turn something that was old, into something new again.

Here is a list of everything we refinished this summer:

A china cabinet
2 medium sized dressers (the yellow & white stripe in previous post)
1 Large dresser
1 mirror
1 bookshelf
2 end tables
1 coffee table
An art piece/sign

Yeah- I know you're telling me! Now you know why I was busy all summer! I'll be posting the tutorials for the end tables, and work my way down the list so you can see everything I've done.

Here is a preview of what I have done.

Old China cabinet from my Grandmother, now a new TV stand/cabinet. Refinished the top, painted it turquoise, and decoupaged some sea charts on the panels.

Two Mexican/Mediterranian-Style end tables made in the 70's. We painted them white, then yellow, then white washed it. Then Decoupaged the floral patterned paper on the top and added a gold trim.

This bookshelf was in need of some serious TLC after spending 40 years in the sun with plants sitting on top of it. We sanded it, painted the outside a creamy white and the inside a soft blue color. Now it's full of ribbon on every shelf.

My Summer Project

I know it's been a while, But I'm finally back into Blogging again. What do I want to share first? My latest project of course!

While cleaning out my Grandma's condo, I found two 60- year old dressers that no one really wanted. I have to admit they were in pretty rough condition. Meanwhile, 3 months ago I had seen a brief picture in some magazine of a yellow and white striped dresser. Idea!

I have done some furniture re-finishing in the past, but these two dressers where definitely my biggest projects yet.

This Picture illustrates the steps we took to get from beginning to finish.

One Dresser was a dark blue with white drawers, and the second was a teal color.

1. We sanded, and then spray painted a primer on.

2. More Sanding, then a spray-painted anitque white to cover

3. More sanding, more spraying antique white

4. More sanding, then taping it off with green frog tape

5. Painted on Butter yellow with foam brushes

6. Still More sanding all over and on the edges to give it a worn and rustic look.

7. Finally 3 layers of a satin varnish. (With light sanding in between each coat of course) 

And that's it, about $45 and 6 weeks later, we have two newly re-finished dressers, ready for the beach house!

Wacky Winter Weather

Can you believe the snow? Yep- I measured... it's 9.5 inches! It's always nice to have a white Christmas (and then melt off immediately the next day). But I think the snow got confused and came a few days early this year.

So I went out and took some pictures of our house and the snow, the boat and the snow, and us and the snow.

eehemm. Sorry- getting a little carried away here! In the mean time I'll tell you why I started thinking about this.

I have another confession- I love the new Hanson song. I know it's been out for a few weeks already, but I just can't get enough of it. Yes- I know this is a little embarassing, but it's a catch tune!

But what's even better is the video-

It's cool, it's goofy, it's colorful, it's dancing in the street, guys doing back flips, and rockin out in the record store- what's not to love? I mean this has my name written all over it!

Engagements, Out Of Towners, Sailing & Monsters...

1. First- Congrats to Tyler and Hayley on your engagement! Can't believe my brother's getting married! Looks like I'm finally getting a sister!

2. Second- our good family friends the Raleigh's came up on their yearly trek from San Diego to Utah to visit us! It's what our family looks forward to the most all summer!

This time we had tons of fun riding the ski lift at Sundance (our annual tradition), going to Park City, Out to eat, and just spending time with them.

We also visited one of my favorite places- Bear Lake. I think my family goes to Bear Lake ever year- it's one of those summer trips that just doesn't feel like summer until I've had my Bear Lake fix- you know what I mean. This year we brought the Raleigh's with us. I don't think I've ever had a busier week there: Sailing, jet skiing, swimming, hot tubbing, 4-wheeling, cleaning, walking, driving, shopping, watching movies, cooking, floating & body surfing. So much to do- I can back completely wiped out. I love Bear Lake- although sad to report I went one more year without catching a glimpse of the infamous Bear Lake Monster. Oh well- there's always next year!

Hair: Long Beautiful Hair

Recently, I have spent quite a bit of time researching hair. That's right hair. Don't ask, it's a long story, but it's all for a website I'm working on. I feel like I have been enlightened as to some lengths (no pun intended) that women go through just to have great hair. Spending thousands- literally $10,000-30,000 on their hair every year. Hours at the beauty parlor- literally like 6-8 hours in one setting (and that's once every six weeks). And then washing, crimping, styling, brushing their hair everyday for an hour or more.

And all of this just to have great hair! I'm getting worn out just talking about it. However, I do understand that your hair is part of what makes you who you are. Whether it's short, long, medium, brown, blond, red, purple, soft, angled, spiky, flirty, shiny, curly, wavy or straight- it's you. No wonder we have such emotional ties to it. And if you want a dramatic change- cut it, dye it, or style it a new way- whatever you want-it's a new you in just a few snips & washes.

With that in mind last Saturday I woke up and decided it was time for a change- so I cut 6 inches off! Yep- I wanted it short, light, airy, and flirty for the summer. I think I'm growing into it! :)

Dance Cravings

Since my blog is called "Dancing With Megan Judd" I thought I should talk about dancing a little bit. Ever since I graduated I get these odd dance cravings. They come out of no where and I keep thinking about them until I satisfy the craving. Like having a craving for watermelon when it's only November.

For example: I will get a craving to be in fan position and then I want to close it. Or my latest one is I really want to do a loop, put up my left arm and do pivots or a run around or something. Weird right? Does that happen to anyone else?

I think it stems from missing dance. Teaching is fun, but it's not the same. Social dancing is fun too- but sometimes I really want to learn a new routine and do some hard core latin or standard or smooth or rythm or whatever. Be challenged a little you know?

Doesn't this picture make you have a craving to be dipped?

Maybe I should have titled this "Dance Withdrawls" instead of "Dance Cravings"!

I had to put this in: Check out this random picture I found of Travis and Allie when I googled for "pictures of a couple ballroom dancing" Way to go guys- you look great! AHHH- makes me want to do a same foot lunge in my smooth dress. Sigh.

Great Date Idea

Tomorrow is the 5th Annual Utah Lake Festival. From 10am-2pm. Admission is FREE (always a plus). Last year I went and they had some fun booths and activities going on. Here's my suggestion: Take your hat and some sunscreen, maybe a sandwich- go hang out at the festival and watch all the boats go by. Should be really fun!

Also- tomorrow is the start of the Utah Summer Games Sailing Competition. It's the Keelboat Regatta (the bigger sailboats). We'll be there tomorrow filming, taking pictures, doing some interviews & hoping to get a ride! Here's the promo I made up for this year's Keelboat Race.

What a Weekend...

Yes indeed- what a weekend! Let me start off by saying- I love Memorial Day weekend- it's the beginning of summer-how can you be sad about that? Well, I'm not sad-good thing. But let me give you a quick you a summary of my weekend-

Plans to go to Scandinavian Festival -Broken glass- cut my finger- no festival, parents got sick from anniversary dinner, gave a private dance lesson, filming, shopping, running errands, planning baby showers, parents still sick, church, meetings, fix dinner, baking cupcakes, picking up people, family picnic, dropping off people, on the way to sailing, car breaks down, buy new parts, fix car, no wind for sailing, dinner, parents feel better.

Whew- what a weekend! Sorry no pictures of any of it- I didn't have time. Today it was back to work and all is back to normal. It was an eventful weekend to say the least!

Adventures with Grandma

Interesting fact- My grandmother is 95 years old. Actually 95 years, 8 months and two days to be exact. And she still lives by herself- yep that's right. She was even still driving herself up until 3 years ago. She is definitely an independent woman. And very cool- she has travelled all over the world. Born in what has to be the smallest town in Wyoming (Cowley), she has lived all over the place. South Dakota, NY, California, Hawaii, Afganistan, Somalia, Kenya and now she lives just down the street from us.

Being in pretty good health considering her age, she is starting becoming quite fragile and forgets a lot more of what she used to. The best part about this is that every time we see her she says something uncommonly funny. And once a week my brother and I head over to her house to vacuum and clean her 3 story condo.

Every now and then, she will spit out the funniest phrases and I have no idea where she comes up with. While we were over cleaning this morning I was reminded of something she said at our family reunion on the road to Colorado last summer. She said, and I quote: "You passed us up on the freeway like a dirty t-shirt!" What that means- I have no idea. Oh Grandma I love you!

PS- I had a really hard time finding a picture with a dirty old t-shirt in the middle of the road- this was the best I could do.

As a small few of you are probably already aware, I am not the most consistent blogger. But I feel that now is the time to ramp it up and start over fresh!

Spring Is In the Air

OK so I don't know about you, but I have had the worst spring fever ever this year! Every morning I wake up with the hope that I will walk out the door and be pleasantly surprised by a rush of at least somewhat warm air. So far- no go. But I still have the hope! I also find myself constantly day dreaming about doing summer things. Swimming, sailing, wearing shorts, drinking smoothies, going for bike rides, picnics in the park, ice cream cones in the convertible, etc, etc. You get the picture. Will summer come soon enough?

Maybe I need a vacation!! Any suggestions?

Valentines + Olympics = One Good Day

I love the Olympics! It is so cool to watch all of the sports almost live and history being made right before your eyes. But I will be honest, I am more of a Summer Olympics fan- But when it comes to Winter Olympics I am all the about the Ice Skating. Of course, it's my favorite winter sport.

However, yesterday I was reminded how thrilling it is to watch other ports like Moguls and Speed skating. So Cool so much fun to watch- they might just win me over!

I also have to say that I love Valentine's Day! I think it's one of my favorite Holidays. I know that many of my single counterparts would disagree with me- there's just something great about a holiday where you can show your friends and family how much you love them-Not too mention a little fun card and cookie making mixed in!

New Red Dress For Christmas

I don't think it's any secret that I love clothes! And if they had offered Fashion Design at BYU I would have seriously considered it. Alas, I settled on dance as my major which I am perfectly happy with!

But from time to time I have had a few friends come to me to ask for fashion advice and costume advice. My friend Krista did just that as she was preparing for a Christmas Solo performance. She wanted a red standard dress for Christmas.

We had so much fun drawing up designs and brainstorming for how we wanted it to look. Although this isn't the exact design we originally came up with, I think her dress turned out pretty well.

On Tuesday I had the opportunity to be featured on the early morning news. Cool Right? Let me start from the beginning...

About 2 months ago, I started teaching ballroom at an elementary school in south Provo called Spring Creek Elementary. I have 10 kids (5 boys 5 girls as luck would have it) and teach twice a week after school for about an hour. Even though the kids can be a handful sometimes, I enjoy it. It's nice to be dancing still- even if it is just a little bit.

Anyway, Big Buddah on the Fox 13 Early show does a segment once a week and highlights a school in Utah. Well, this week they decided to highlight Spring Creek Elementary. And they wanted to do a short segment on the ballroom program- yipee! So for the last couple of weeks we have been preparing to be on TV. The kids were so excited- they say that they are "stars" now that they have been on TV!

So the interview went well, the kids did a great job on their dance, and everything was great. The only thing I didn't like -was how early it was! So just in case you weren't up at 6:08am on Wednesday morning here is the clip.

PS- My class is Performing Saturday, December 12 @ 12-1:30pm at Timpview High School. It will be Timpview High School's Christmas Concert with the elementary classes worked in between. It should be a great concert- Come and Watch!
There will also be a pancake breakfast with Santa before for anyone who wants to come!

Sailing in November

So in case you haven't noticed, my family is way into Sailing. I mean we are pretty much die hard fans. Don't get me wrong- if you're picture of sailing is an older couple on a large hulled boat with a big white sail, drinking lemonade and sailing into the crimson sky on a muggy summer evening... well then yes you're right- I do enjoy that kind of sailing. But hardly ever do we get to that kind. We're into the action packed adventure sailing a Hobie Cat (Catamaran) to be exact.

Anyway, my brother and my dad are some of the most extreme sailing enthusiasts, which means we go sailing in November. It may be cold, it may be windy, but at least we can still go sailing! Go figure! And yes- it was cold that day- I'm guessing 40 degrees with the wind chill?

I love Magazines!

One of my favorites things to do is to go to the bookstore at night and just perusing the magazines. Gardening, Pools, Landscaping, Home, Design, Wedding, Travel and Style magazines- I love them all. I also love catalogs and a couple of weeks ago I took a trip up to Trolley Square to visit a couple of my favorite stores- Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware. I grabbed all of the catalogs I could and I have been having a ball going through and thinking up new ideas and how I want to design and decorate my own home.

And my favorite by far is Pottery Barn Kids! Even though I don't have any kids they have the cutest stuff! If you haven't checked it out yet your have order some catalogs and check it out. Pottery Barn Teen is also another favorite.

So for this blog entry I thought I would include some photos I love and will file away to remember when I get my own house.

Take Me Back To Back Colorado

So this summer I have been to Colorado 3 times. Yes, you heard me right- 3 times! Funny ho wit all worked out because all 3 times were with different people and for different reasons.

Trip #1: Family Reunion

Our famous Tippets Family Reunion. It's actually called the Brigham Lewis Tippets Jr. Family Reunion. He was my Great-Grandfather from Cowley, Wy. My mother's mother's father. Anyway, there are about 200+ of us now, but we still get together for one weekend every 3 years. We always meet somewhere different, and this year it was high in the Colorado Rockies at a YMCA. It was fun- But definitely colder than I was used to over the 4th of July Weekend! Here are the highlights!
Here is picture that my brother Tyler took from the 4th of July. Pretty Good huh? I have to say it was so weird watching the fireworks and seeing your breath because it was so cold!

Trip #2: Durango With The Raleigh's

We have some really good family friends that we see every summer. Sometimes we go down to visit them in San Diego, and sometimes they come up to Utah. This time they came here to Utah. Their son Dane just got home from his mission, so this was a trip to celebrate his homecoming. After staying with us for a few days, we all got in the car and headed down to Colorado. Durango to be exact. We went river rafting, and over to Mesa Verde to check out the old Pre-Puebloian Native American Ruins. It was tons of fun and very cool!

Trip #3: LeAnne's Wedding!

So my good friend LeAnne got married this past weekend, so a bunch of us took a road trip out to Denver. Technically she lives in Golden, CO which is only 20 min past Denver. It was great to be there to share that experience with her. I wish I could say that I got to do a little more sight seeing- but at least we made it to downtown Denver which is now one of my favorite cities. Denver is so cool! Here are the highlights.

More Wedding Cake Pictures

So this weekend I did my third official wedding cake, and it was really fun. It turned out really well and i was so excited. This time it was for my cousin Amber Tippets who got married on Sunday, so I had fun doing double duty as maid of honor/wedding cake creator! It was crazy at times but fun.

Yesterday Amber (best friend/cousin) asked me if I would be willing to take some engagement pictures for her and Han. I said "Of Course"! It was actually a lot of fun, I haven't had a chance to get out and take some fun pictures of people in a long time. Amber were Han were very fun and playful the whole time and as I found out when I got home they are also very photogenic! We raced against the sun as we only had about half an hour before we lost our light. So here are some of my favorites that I put together really quickly for them- check it out.

So someday I think I will be a better blogger, and stay more up to date. But it seems like I have been really busy lately, yet my life is filled with things that weren't really newsworthy. (That's my excuse for staying away from my blog for so long :) Anyway, for one of my work projects we came up with a review site for great programs on how to get started in Affiliate Marketing. If you don't know what that is- don't worry, it takes a long time to explain. But we all decided to make a video and tell our own story of how we got into affiliate marketing. So here's my video (yes it includes dancing don't worry) I put it all together in about an hour. It's supposed to be a simple video about a minute long that tells the story of how I ended up doing what I'm doing now for work. Hope you enjoy!

My New Christmas Card

So about 5 or 6 years ago I had an idea for a short movie. I heard this song (which in case you are curious it is the theme song for an old TV show called Thirty Something- I've never seen it) and then I knew I wanted it to be a movie that featured everyone in our family. So just about a month ago I rediscovered the song- and decided to make my vision come to life. After working on my parents and my brother liked it so much we decided to send it out as our Christmas card this year. So about 20 hours later (I know ridiculous right?) and here it is: you guys are the first to preview it!

PS- I hope this one actually works this time- I have to apologize for my first video for some reason I can't seem to export it with sound.

I know, so long overdue

Yes- it's true it has been 4 weeks since my last post! Yikes! I 'm still trying to work on being a better blogger! So my readers, (all 4 or 5 of you :) just to let you know that I'm doing OK and haven't dropped off the face of the earth- I wanted to post a new blog today and show you some projects I have been working on in my absence.

I have recently become interested in making videos, and I'm really enjoying learning all about what it takes to make better commercials and shorts etc. I whipped up this short video while I was testing out a new program on the computer, and my family liked it so much we decided to send it out as part of our Christmas card. So you guys will be the first to preview it. I actually have another short 1 min film that includes our entire family- but I've run into some bugs with that one and I will post it when I have it ready so stay tuned.

Audrey, Marilyn, Marian?

Earlier this week I was posed with the question: "Which celebrity do I look the most like?" It came up because I was asked to do some choreography for a show at a Theater in Lindon. While I was doing the choreography, the director informed me that a couple of the girls cannot perform every show because they would be out of town, and she asked me to step in. So yes, I am an understudy for 3 different people performing in the dances I choreographed. Kind of funny.

Every girl is portraying a famous celebrity, and it took everyone (including me) a long time to figure out who I look the most like.
I really think I look most like Audrey Hepburn. But I also have to be Maid Marian (from Robinhood - yeah I know really random) and then I fill in as Marilyn Monroe in a couple of weeks.

So who do you think I look more like? Audrey, Marilyn or Marian?

Did I mention- I want a vacation?

So I think everyone who knows me knows that I love to travel. I love seeing new things and going new places-but I'm not alone- everyone in my family loves to travel- (I think it's where I got it). So my dad had this idea for us to start a website about our travel adventures and he put me in charge of doing it. So it's been my project for the last several months- and I have to be honest. I'm not very technically savvy and the whole process has been much harder than I expected. But finally last night after long hours of figuring things out I finally got it up online!

Now I just have to figure out how to make the picture on my home page show up :O). Second Post- Voting, California, Prop 8

So here goes- my second official post- I think I'm on a roll! The other night I got a call from someone in my ward and he said..."You have a special meeting to go to for Californians tomorrow night." So of course my curiosity peaked as to what this "special meeting" could possibly be about. But as I soon found out it was to raise awareness and a call to action for Proposition 8. I was not aware of the importance this Proposition holds in the California law. I'm sure most of you have heard all about it, and for those of you who haven't I've included a link for the website with more information that can explain it better than I can.

If I was still considered a resident of California I would get my absentee ballot and vote, but since I'm here in Utah, I'll just try to spread the word- But if you are still in California-Please vote 'Yes' for Proposition 8!!

First post ever- well, technically second with words.

So due to popular demand (and maybe just a little bit out of boredom) I decided to write my first post on my blog. I know I don't have a huge fan base but those of you who know about my blog, (you know who you are :) No longer do you have to sit and watch me do the samba over and over again.

Truth be told, I only created a blog because I was applying for a dance teaching job at a University, and I didn't want to clutter my blog with my personal life. Now, that that job and several others have come and gone, I decided that I might as well throw caution to the wind, and let you in on my life.

So this summer has been quite eventful, filled with various activities that are probably too numerous and most of them too boring to go through each one. But I will talk about my new love. I think I may just be head over heels, and smitten with excitement. In fact I just came back from wonderful weekend at Bear Lake and the most romantic sunset cruise. That's right my new love is sailing!!! A sport that has deep roots within my family, and we were fortunate enough this year to buy a 1988 Hobie Cat 16. This boat was actually a national champion, and boy does it live up to its name.

To explain this a little further, a Hobie (as we call it), is like the sporty model for sailboats. It has two hulls that float in the water like pontoons, and then you sit on a trampoline that is stretched across the two hulls. There is one mast, that supports the main sail, and the jib (the smaller sail). And it is so much fun! It's pretty addicting if you do it once you just want to keep on going. Maybe someday soon I'll even load some pictures of us and the boat so you can get a better feeling of my tender feelings toward those bright blue and yellow sails.

So I just got back from an almost perfect weekend in Bear Lake. If you ever want to simplify and de-stress your life I highly recommend taking a couple of days and going sailing at Bear Lake. You just can't beat the Caribbean-like blue water with the breeze that will carry you from one shore to the next. There's other feeling like sailing. The rush of the wind through your hair, the hum of the sail flapping in the wind, and exhilaration of the world rolling past and time standing still.

Although I have learned a lot about sailing I still feel like I could use a lot more knowledge and practice in this sport. But my practice will just have to wait until next year, being now October and the season has come to a close. But I know I will wait with anticipation to get back to my new love next season.
